Breastfeeding Grief

Many mothers plan to breastfeed even before they are pregnant, they attend classes, seek out lactation consultants, and read on the internet, magazines and books. Once prepared they day dream about how breastfeeding will be. When it does not go as planned, moms might feel distraught and disillusioned. It is difficult for a mom to switch gears, switch feeding plans, and hold the same enthusiastic emotions regarding the current breastfeeding routines. Many moms will need to grieve the dream of exclusive breastfeeding.
While grief over this loss is normal, there are also signs and symptoms to watch out for in case the grief turns into postpartum depression. In this section we have tackled the topics of depression and grief. Moms can also find comfort in reading poems or stories of other mothers who have experienced breastfeeding difficulties.
