Certified Lactation Educators give adult education classes in which they teach the benefits of breastfeeding and how to breastfeed. A CLE is often a mother who has breastfed her own children. She is likely familiar with the local support networks and professionals in her area.

Some CLEs have participated in an innovative Lactation Educator Course, such as those offered by UCLA.
